Plasticfibers released from washing pollute our waterbodies and food supply. The GUPPY FRIEND wash bag is the first solution to prevent microfibers from entering into rivers and oceans.

The ProblemThe problem
Synthetic materials are poisoning our oceans and food supply. When we think of the issue, images of plastic bottles bags and bottles come to mind, but synthetic textiles are a big part of the problem.
The problem starts in your laundry. An alarming number of tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics are making their way from washing machine into rivers and oceans. Unfortunately, sewage treatment plants don’t effectively filter out these microfibers.

08_lupeAccording to a research team from the University of California at Santa Barbara a city of 100,000 inhabitants releases a wash-related volume of microfibers equivalent to 15,000 plastic bags. A city the size of Berlin may be responsible for 540,000 plastic bags – every single day.

The tiny fibers are consumed by aquatic organisms, which can result in gastrointestinal infections and blockages, reproductive problems, and starvation—problems that ultimately work their way up the food chain.

09_solutionOur solution
The GUPPY FRIEND wash bag filters out the tiniest microfibers that are released from textiles during washing. The fabric bag, made of a specially-designed microfilter material captures 99% of fibers released in the washing process.

07_iconsYou can see the fibers trapped inside the bag after each wash. Simply dispose the fibers properly in your trash. In the process, GUPPY FRIEND draws attention to the microfiber pollution and helps fight the problem.

Independent research has confirmed the effectiveness of the GUPPY FRIEND bag.

06_how01How it works
Don’t change your washing ritual – just its toxic effect
1. Put synthetic textiles into the GUPPY FRIEND wash bag
2. Close the bag and wash as usual
3. Take out wet cloth and residues of microfibers from the inside of the bag. Discard properly.

What do we want? Who are we?
GUPPY FRIEND is a startup based in Germany, Berlin. Our goal is to reduce plastics and microwaste pollution in the world’s rivers and oceans. In addition to the GUPPY FRIEND washing machine bag we are developing a filter for washbasins for household and commercial use as well as restraint devices for floating debris.

GUPPY FRIEND was founded by LANGBRETT community of interest – a group of surfers, skaters and creative individuals – driven by the desire to create sustainable clothes for the surf and outdoor sport.

In September, we are initiating a crowdfunding campaign and seeking to partner with industry and other stakeholders to spread the word about the bag and to produce as many GUPPY FREINDS as possible at an affordable price.
